Great Railroad strike 1877: The Great Railroad Strike of 1877 was considered as the first major rail strike of the country. It paralyzed for a short time the countrys commerce and forced the governors in ten states to gather together 60,000 militia members to revive rail traffic. This happened when the salaries of employees from railroads were cut as a result of the Financial Panic in 1973. The workweek was also slashed from three to two days only. Violence then broke out in several states because of the strike (Digital History). Southwest railroad strike 1886: The so-called Great Southwestern Strike of 1886 paralyzed the railway lines in five states in USA when the unskilled and semi-skilled railroaders refused to work for their employer. Work Team Analysis Essay At work I am part of the Incident Debriefing Team. We meet after any incident to watch any video that may have been taken, read incident reports from those involved and then try to figure out anything that could have been improved on. Our team is comprised up of Incident Response Team members (me) from each shift along with representatives from administration, medical services, and if at all possible our legal team. When this team was first formed it was just administration members and at times senior management who conducted the debriefing. These same people would then put out there findings on how the responders were to act in another similar situation. This system did not work as it caused rifts between response teams and management. The response teams felt that they assumed all the risk, made split second decisions that were judged by those who have never had to be in that position. While we all agree that a debriefing team was a solid plan we did not agree on who was currently on it. The idea to have responders and medical service representatives on the team was well received. The revamping of the team members brought all the different classifications of work groups’ ideas to the table. It also allowed for more clear answers to those affected by the decisions made in the team meetings, as it could be disseminated between those at the meeting and their co-workers as well as the official memos that came out at the administration level. I could relate to any questions from my co-workers better than an upper level manager who did not even work on site. There are risks in a group such as this. Generally in our environment there is always a strong feeling of tension between the different work classifications. Security wanted safety all around at all costs, but administration looked at cost of implementing security changes. Those involved in treatment settings generally did not understand the security concerns while security was not willing to sacrifice safety for say a more lax treatment module. In the first several meetings of this team there was little accomplished. Most of the allotted time was spent bickering among the sub groups. Time was also a factor. We are a twenty four hour operation therefore all the parties needed at the meeting are never in the facility at the same time. To get the needed personnel to the meetings, overtime had to be paid, and schedules changed. This also creates tension as the meetings were generally held at 10:00am, when the administration was on site, but two thirds of the team was at home, some of which sleeping from the night shift. All of these issues were brought to light in the first few team meetings. Eventually agreements were made to have the meetings held during the shift that the incident took place. This spread some of the schedule changing around to all involved. Along with other subtle changes in the team’s understanding in the value of each other’s opinions and expertise the team began to put out solid memos with well thought out policy changes when they were needed. It took several months for the majority of the staff to recognize that the team was fulfilling a long needed voice of reason after an incident. The training that came of the teams suggestions has been well received and helped reduce injuries in critical incidents. The response teams now feel that they have a voice in the policies that affect them, and their team’s safety. Our team works in a very stressful and emotionally charged atmosphere. To do our job it takes a special personality type which has been called the Type A personality. Having these strong personalities at all levels helps our organization work, but in the team, it creates conflict, which can be very hard to resolve. Having a strong leader who can recognize the beginnings of a conflict situation and help resolve it is critical. As the article states another concern for groups is that the leader may not â€Å"have the skills to use differences within groups to make good synergic decisions that are owned by all involved† (Broom and Casison, 2002). Having effective team leaders is essential to the success of the team. Our team leader is good, and does affair job but even he realizes that he needs to work on getting everyone in the team to own the decisions put out by the team. Not everyone in the group is going to be completely sold on every aspect of the decision but he/she needs to understand that the other views are sometimes better than their own. A leader who can get a team to recognize that is going to have the most success.

A few of the main Siberian natives that are grown all over the United States include alfalfa, lettuce, asparagus, smooth bromegrass, and crested wheatgrass. There is no proven record of when alfalfa was first grown but it is known to be originated in central Asia. In 490 B.C., the Persians carried it into Greece with the invasion by Xerxes. After this the Romans who were fighting in Greece took it back to Rome in 146 B.C. The introduction into Spain was around 711 A.D. by the Moors from Northern Africa who were on a conquest in Spain. From Spain it moved into France, Belgium, and England. In 1519 Alfalfa was introduced to Mexico by Cortes, a Spaniard who was on a rampage through Mexico. Somewhere around 18 or 19 years later, Spain rampaged again in Peru and Chili but left alfalfa here also. In that century, it was brought to the Atlantic coast line of the United States but was not used by the Indian inhabitants or by the early European settlers at this time. In about 1853 or 1854 alfalfa was introduced into California and it was believed that it was brought in my Chili. In 1898 a man by the name of N.E. Hansen of South Dakota ma de a journey to Siberia in search of a more cold tolerable variety of alfalfa because he and many other farmers were having trouble growing this crop successfully in the colder conditions of the northern portions of the United States. Alfalfa is now grown all over the United States and in other parts of the world as well.

New technological

Many people predicted the downfall of the IT industry a long time ago. After the technological bubble burst by 2000, their predictions saw reality with many dot com companies closing down in the face of investor uncertainty. Huge brand names like AOL eBay took a hit as well and only the strongest like Microsoft survived. Many thought this was the end of technological era even though this was not the case. The IT sector had not stopped growing nor had it declined; it had just stabilized and kept growing, even if not at the same rate as it was a few years ago. With technological advancements coming in by the hour, it is only natural for new people to rise above the rest to make a name for them selves among the multitude of entrepreneurs and whiz kids of the past and present. People like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs still might be the key players in the industry, they do however are no longer the new blood that this industry almost always seems to require in order to stay on top. Google founders Larry Page Sergey Brin could arguably be the next major players after the ones that actually started the hype of the technological era. More recently however, new faces have come up. Two of these are as follows: Technology: Youtube Description: Videosharing website that allows its user to upload, view and share audio visual clips. Popularity: Close to 8 million hits per day. YouTube was founded by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim, who were all early employees of PayPal. Prior to PayPal, Hurley studied design at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Chen and Karim studied computer science together at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The domain name â€Å"YouTube.com† was activated on February 15, 2005, and the website was developed over the following months. The creators offered the public a preview of the site in May 2005, and six months later, YouTube made its official debut. Youtube became on of the fastest growing websites and even outpaced Myspace at this. Its business model is an advertising based revenue model where users clicking on ads are the source of revenue. This was an innovative idea and developed by the three youngsters with Chad Hurley being the Chief Executive Office and Steven Chen being the chief technology officer. Hurley, Chen and Karim got their start in the business world during the dot-com bubble and the bust that followed. Their venture money came in part through their connection to Roelof Botha, the South African former PayPal CFO. YouTube was born when the founders wanted to share some videos from a dinner party with friends in San Francisco. Sending the clips around by e-mail was not possible because they kept bouncing for being too big. Posting videos online wasn’t feasible either as no website allowed it. In 11 months the site became one of the most popular on the Internet because the founders designed it so people can post almost anything they like on YouTube in minutes. Steve Chen grew up in Taiwan until the age of 15, when his family immigrated to the United States. He attended high school at John Hersey High School as well as the Illinois Math and Science Academy and college from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In June 2006, Chen was named by Business 2.0 as one of the â€Å"The 50 people who matter now† in business. Hence the person to look out for would be Steve Chen. Karim had a lesser role as he developed the website but was an advisor by the end. Their dreams were realized when Google bought Youtube for a whooping $1.6 Billion and made them the modern entrepreneurs of today. Technology: Fecebook Description: English social networking website. The site was founded as Thefacebook in February 2004 by college sophomore Mark Zuckerberg at Harvard University with technical support from Andrew McCollum and financial support from Eduardo Saverin. Zuckenberg was not a new player in the field however. In 2003, Zuckerberg and friend Adam D'Angelo launched the Synapse Media Player. This is similar to the way Bill Gates was in his younger years; attaining acclaim as an avid programmer and being noticed by firms like IBM. Hence, it can be safely said that people like Steve Chen and Mark Zuckerberg are the modern day equivalent of Bill Gates and Steve jobs. They might not be as exceptional nor are their innovations as far reaching as Windows or iPod, they still are the current knights of the technological era and have done what their predecessors did before them; create something exceptionally unique with the ability to influence people internationally.
